We visit Pickering Thornton le Dale & Filey
View Dates & BookWe visit Pickering, Thornton Le Dale & Filey
Legend has it that Pickering garnered its name in 270 BC when King Peredurus lost his ring and accused a young woman of stealing it. However, later in the day, when he sat down to dinner, the ring was discovered in the belly of a pike that he was about to consume. Hence, the town became known as Pike-ring with the legend evidenced in the coat-of-arms to this day. Despite it having a relatively small population of 7000, Pickering is fortunate enough to still have most facilities that many towns have lost.
Thornton-Le-Dale is a beautiful, quaint English village and undoubtedly one of the most picturesque in Yorkshire. With its olde worlde charm, scenic surroundings and friendly atmosphere, it is easy to see why the village has been voted the prettiest in Yorkshire on more than one occasion!
In 1806 The Gentlemans Magazine described Filey as an escape from the boisterous crowds of Scarborough and a place of simple pleasures. In 2019 visitors continue to enjoy the serenity the town brings them in weather fine and foul.
