We visit Helmsley Market & Pickering for the day
View Dates & BookWe visit Helmsley Market & Pickering for the day.
This pretty market town lies right on the edge of the North York Moors National Park. Duncombe Park, the ancestral home of Lord Feversham, sits in attractive parkland at the edge of the town. There is a Norman castle and an ancient market cross as well as old coaching inns and a varied selection of tearooms. The Market is held in the central ancient Market Square every Friday and is alleged to date back to the 13th century. It was originally held in the churchyard with the market cross being moved from there to its current position. As you stroll, youll spot traders hawking everything from clothes to fresh food. Take a whiff of the blooming bouquets, a feast for your senses. Dont miss the craft fair at the town hall, a treasure trove of local artistry. The market offers a mix of traders selling clothes, gifts, household goods, food, and flowers.
You can find Pickering between the four major Yorkshire towns of Scarborough, Whitby, Helmsley and Malton. Known as the "Gateway to the Moors" and said to be one of the oldest towns in the area (it dates back to at least 270 BC) Pickering is a fine town built on a hill, at the top of which a well-preserved castle looks down over the town.
There's some stunning scenery around Pickering and the most eye-catching has to be the Hole of Horcum - a vast hollow carved out by the action of rivers and streams (though legend has it that a giant grabbed a huge handful of soil to throw at his wife).
